Bro. Daniel Nathaniel Jordan

Daniel Nathaniel Jordan was born on August 1, 1939, to Clarissa Franklin and Moses Daniel Jordan in Four Square Valley in the parish of St. Philip, Barbados. He attended nearby St. Patrick’s Boys’ School. He had a knack for wanting to see how things work and so was drawn to most things mechanical. After leaving school he became an apprentice in the mechanic’s trade at the Redmond & Taylor Garage in the capital city of Bridgetown. Post-training, he went to work for the Diamond Bus Company before immigrating to the United Kingdom in 1960 where he worked for London Transport as a bus driver. He later got a job working for the Royal Mail Postal Services. In 1976 Daniel married Ruby May Bonne. Together they had one child, a daughter Hyacinth. A few years later he decided a change of environment might be more to his liking and so moved to Boston. He liked working with his hands but plumbing seemed to be his specialty. However, he was comfortable fixing anything mechanical, most things electrical and doing carpentry; a real handyman. His first employment stint in the Boston area was with Resort Realty from 1983 to 1986. Sometime later, he was hired by Maloney Properties before getting a position with Long Bay Management which later morphed into United Housing Management Properties. Between these two entities, Daniel spent the last decade of his working life as a maintenance person attending to and addressing most maintenance type problems occurring in the rental housing these companies managed until he retired in 2007. As a youngster, his parents sent him to music lessons and he became fairly proficient on the organ and piano. He used those skills to enhance the devotional services at a few churches in Boston. Shortly after his arrival in Boston in the early 1980’s, Brother Jordan would drop in at Deeper Life Church on Blue Hill Ave where he had some friends and would help in fixing up the building and doing odd jobs but would also play for them occasionally if the need arose. In the early 90’s, he became a member at Beulah Pilgrim Holiness Church. Here Brother Daniel was the pianist and organist for nearly two decades. He, along with a musically inclined sister - Diane Byer, launched the Beulah Mass Choir. They were the co-directors of this group. Daniel was also an important part of the Men’s Ministries auxiliary at Beulah. In 2017, our brother became a member at Destiny Life Center International until his passing. He also served as a board member for a few years and was an integral part of their Men’s Ministries Program. Pastor Cooper, the senior minister, spoke very highly of Brother Daniel describing him as ‘faithful and trustworthy’ and likened our brother’s journey to how the Apostle Paul saw his life in retrospect based on 2 Timothy 4: 7 – ‘the good fight fought, the course successfully completed and the faith kept’. Pastor Cooper stated that in all areas Daniel served with distinction. Recreationally, and like many West Indians, Daniel loved to play dominoes and enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. In his later years when he was still mobile our brother also attended Jubilee and nearby Faith Christian Church which was close to his apartment. Over the years, he developed several deep and lasting friendships that continued during his hospitalizations and helped to sustain him and contribute to an improved quality of life even as a long-term patient at Webster Park Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Rockland, MA. Brother Daniel was one of 8 children: 5 girls and 3 boys. The girls were: Millicent, Elsie, Kathleen, Serline and Joyce. His brothers were: Livingston and James. They have all predeceased him. Our Brother Daniel leaves behind: one daughter Hyacinth Jordan-Thompson, a son-in-law and one grandson, Dejanel. He was the uncle of Collin, Shirley and Bently Griffith. He was related to these families: Robinson, Weekes, Lewis, Brathwaite, Paine, Garret and Thomas. Apart from his blood relatives Daniel had a host of close church family friends with whom he would socialize and lend his expertise in fixing a broken lawnmower, snow blower or a household appliance. Our brother will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
