Martin Carlyle Ifill

December 20, 1928 — December 23, 2022

Martin Carlyle Ifill was born on December 20, 1928, to Edna Ifill, St. Lucy Barbados. Mr. Ifill played an intricate part in our family’s lives. Many referred to him as a father, uncle, or grandfather. Martin, aka Pops, was a man of small stature, but he exhibited a sharp demeanor which was influential and strongly dictated. Without any research or experience, Pops was hardly right but never wrong, however, that didn’t stop him from voicing his opinion vehemently. He was very strict on details and mentally retained a lot of information. I was always intrigued with how sharp his mind was because he gave the impression of an experience and older man, but his mind represented a man half his age. Pops had a famous saying that went something like this, “hey pops, how you are you doing” his reply was, “as usual”, and that response never changed for any greeting. Pops loved to wear hats tilted to the side, and he loved to dress. Pops were always sharp. He reminded me of Mario Brando playing Don Corleone in The Godfather. He had a thing for numbers and their significance to each individual person. I believe this science is called numerology, but Pops had his own configurated version. Pops was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bridgetown, Barbados. He was also an active board member of a credit union, where he played a significant role in the onset of details. He once told me that he owned a shop when he was a young man but later in life, he successful in running a private taxi service. Pops met his wife Evelyn over fifty years ago. They would separate when Evelyn moved to America in the 60's to stay. Their love for each other never died but was expressed through many postcards and letters to each other. They would later join hands in marriage to live out their latter years. Again, he unites with his wife, Evelyn Patricia Atkins-Ifill (deceased 1/10/2022) again but in the realm of eternal rest. He was loved and admired by the Atkins, Tyler, and Johnson families. He has left a forever-lasting impact on our lives. May his spirit sore like an eagle in the sky and be at peace.
