Nellie Mae Jones

March 11, 1956 — November 14, 2022

Nellie Mae Jones was a kind, resilient, courageous, and caring woman, who cared for everyone and always had time for people, no matter what was going on in her day. She would welcome you in, put the kettle on and just sit and listen. Whether it was a quick chat on the phone or you just coming over to 86 Dewitt, you always felt loved after spending time with Nellie. Nellie passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on November 14th ,2022, at the age of 66. She was Born on March 11th ,1956, to Willie Mae Goss Jones and Burlah McClean in Anderson, South Carolina. Nellie was Willie’s little ‘Mae’. Nellie moved to Boston at the age 3 from Anderson South Carolina with her mom and siblings. Nellie attended the Boston Public School system where She graduated from Jeremiah E. Burke High School (Class of 1974) and went on to Graduated Roxbury Community College where she received her Associates Degree. After graduating Nellie went on to work for Fidelity Investments and after her career, she started her family day care. Nellie loved the kids; she was the family day care for all her great nieces and nephews, and the community. Nellie had a big heart, and her doors were always open. Nellie was the family go to for all their administrative needs, if it was helping you with a resume, applying for a job or helping her sisters stay tech savvy. Nellie was the one you call. Nellie was a staple of her community living in Madison Park Village for over 35 years she was the 2nd Mother to so many of her children’s friends always opening her home and being the neighbourhood watch always watching out for everyone's children. Growing up, Nellie was fun, loving and caring. She enjoyed reading and taking photos. Nellie was a memory keeper, always had her camera capturing family moments for her archives back in the days of photo albums and today her Facebook albums. Nellie was not camera shy herself and was always ready for a photo. In 1981 Nellie welcomed her first child Simeon Jones on September 05th. And in 1989 Nellie welcomed her second child Lakendra Jones on June 2nd. Simeon & Kendra were her heart, her baby boy and baby girl. Nellie was their Superhero, as a single mom she was relentless in making sure her children had what they needed and what they wanted, she had her Village of siblings, friends, nieces and nephews to help raise her amazing children to who they are today. Her amazing children made her a grandmother of 5 grandchildren: SaMurai, Zi’Haire, Di’Auvion, NinaSimone, and Kalani. She adored her grandchildren and love having them over to spoil them and capturing their experience with Nanny. Nellie lived for holidays and family time, she loved to have a good time with her grandchildren. She was their Super Nanny! Nellie was an Aunty Mom to her nieces and nephews. She taught her nieces to be sassy, how to do hair, and how to take no stuff. Her passion for caring for children and stepping in when needed to help raise her nieces and nephew inspired her to become a foster parent. Nellie was a foster parent for the Home for Little wanderers and helped children who were victims of trauma or grappling with significant emotional or behavioural challenges. Nellie believed that children are the future and all they need was love and someone to show them the way. Nellie was a loved foster mom and she enjoyed helping the youth of the future. Kindness for others was a character trait of Nellie’s that shone through in her daily life and was particularly evident in her love for others. Whoever came through the door was welcomed with genuine love and respect and Nellie would happily be a listening ear and helping hand whenever she was needed with her family and her community. Nellie also had a great sense of humour and always made life light-hearted. Nellie was the life and soul of the party, and she enjoyed hosting many gatherings for her family. Nellie loved sharing her daily affirmations with her village on Facebook and keeping up with her family in the digital age. But you weren’t leaving BuryFine behind, she was on all social media platforms to keep up and capture her family moments.
