After a brief employment period with Domino Sugar he became an entrepreneur and opened his own auto repair shop, Mel's Automatic Transmissions. In 1966, Melvin moved to Seattle WA where, for the next year, he worked as an aircraft mechanic for Boeing Airlines. He returned to Boston and on August 16, 1967, he joined Microwave Development Laboratories as a mechanical engineer. There, he was instrumental in helping the company develop the first radar detectors for automobiles. On January 1, 1990, he retired from Microwave Development Laboratories to pursue personal interests.
