Ethany Lorine Holgate was born March 10, 1930, in Boston, MA. The daughter of the late Thomas and the late Ethany (Barros) Garner. She was raised in the South-End of Boston while attending the Boston Public Schools.
After Ethany graduated from Girls High School, she started her career path with a simple job, wrapping gifts within a department store. Ethany wanted to pave the way for African American Women with her aspirations of being a Math Teacher. She then obtained her certificate in secretarial skills from Boston Business School, where she gained the knowledge and skills to obtain a position within Roxbury District Court. She worked as a data entry clerk and supervisor until her retirement.
In November of 1956, Ethany and the late Massachusetts State Representative, Franklin W. Holgate, Sr. had a quaint wedding at her home. From this union, she was blessed with two children; the late Franklin W. Holgate, Jr. and Lorine L. Holgate.
Ethany always kept her faith in high regard; thus, she chose to seek after a church home which became Eagle Heights Ministries in Revere, MA, and also she attended Jubilee Christian Church in Boston, MA.
After 20 years of committed service within the Roxbury District Court House, she retired and relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her late sister, Gloria Avelino. There she became a faithful member of the Victory Christian Center.
Throughout her life, Ethany traveled, exploring places such as Germany, Australia, Aruba, Hawaii, Jerusalem. She enjoyed playing Tennis, Water Aerobics, Zumba, and walking. She also enjoyed listening to music, especially Ella Fitzgerald.
At the age of 83, she returned to Massachusetts. Although she had a laid-back, quiet, and humble spirit, she developed new relationships with other seniors from the YMCA and the Council of Aging. She continued to hold on to her faith.
Ethany is preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, Massachusetts State Representative, Franklin W. Holgate, Sr., her son, Franklin W. Holgate, Jr., and her beloved sister, Gloria Avelino.
Ethany leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Lorine Holgate; her grandchildren: Amber, Franklin, Sonia, and Tristene Holgate; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Our Beloved Ethany has not only touch the hearts of the ones that knew her, but she also touched the lives of so many others throughout her travels through life.
