Sergio is survived by his parents John T. and Ida Goncalves and his birth mother Eva Campos.
He had 7 siblings, Genie Coreia, Manuel John Goncalves, Maria Nadeau, Joao Goncalves, Eduardo Goncalves, John Lomba and Maria Gilmete.
He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Sergio was a very well known member in his community, hard working and an avid volunteer.
Sergio was a Facilities Assistant in the Athletic Department at UMASS Boston where he started working there as a student employee in 1990.
Sergio was the board chairperson of the Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL), which annually provides services to over 5,000 people with disabilities.
He was a leader and advocate for two decades for equal access to health care, housing, and transportation for the disability community,
widely recognized for using his personal experience to benefit thousands of people in Boston and across the state.
He also served on the board of the Commonwealth Care Alliance.
