Margaret Lucille Hampton

Margaret Lucille Cash Hampton, a native of Hendersonville, North Carolina, a long-time resident of Mattapan and then Stoughton, Massachusetts, was born March 9, 1929 to Otis Benjamin Cash, Sr. (deceased) and Margaret Lucille Neill Cash(deceased).

She was a twin, and was one of eleven children who survived childhood, including: Otis, John, Mary and Margaret, Edward, Edith, Homer William, Virginia, Curtis, David and Rose. Since she was the second oldest child, she helped her mother in the rearing of seven children who were born after her. In addition to caring for her younger siblings, she worked part-time as a teenager. She graduated from Ninth Avenue School in Hendersonville, NC.

Margaret received Christ as her Lord and Savior, early in life, and became active at Star of Bethel Baptist Church in Hendersonville, NC. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and learned how to play the piano because she wanted to play hymns for church services.

She moved to Boston in her mid-twenties to assist her brother Otis and Sister-in law, Efferee with the care of their young children.  It was not a surprise that her love for children lead to caring for many children in her Mattapan neighborhood and to a long career operating her own Day care center business under the State Agency, Family Day Care of Brookline.  She operated this business through her retirement in 1995.

It was while Margaret was in Boston, that she met, fell in love and married Lincoln Hampton, Sr. They had six children, Lincoln, Sanford, Ruth, Dewane, Nitanya and Neill between 1958 and 1968.  The two of them enjoyed raising their children and traveling. She spent most of her time at her Mattapan home gardening and interacting with neighbors, from her porch.

Margaret enjoyed hymns, classical music, poetry, and most of all--baking cakes, pies, buns, stollens, fruit cakes, and cinnamon rolls.  Her kitchen was a place frequented by family and friends to sharing stories, drama, and getting great laughs. She was always prepared to listen and provide a plate of food to anyone experiencing life’s challenges or to encourage and celebrate their accomplishments.     

Margaret had a strong love for poetry. Growing up, she memorized countless poems and taught all of her children and grandchildren.  While residing with her daughter, Nitanya’s family in Stoughton, Margaret enjoyed talks and activities at the Stoughton Council on Aging.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Lincoln Hampton, Sr., her son's Sanford Hampton and Dewane Hampton; and siblings Otis B. Cash, Jr, John Cash, Mary Cash Banks, Edward Cash and Virginia Cash-Kemp. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children Lincoln Hampton, Jr. (Regina), Ruth Hampton, Nitanya (Hampton) Andrews (Stephen), Neill Hampton; her grandchildren Sherlene, Carly, Talia, Ellis, Dana, Dewane Jr. Clay; Neill Jabari and Brianna ;her great grandchildren, Daniel, Demaria, and Lily; siblings Edith Cash Sloan, Homer William Cash (Barbara), Curtis Cash, David Cash and Rose Cash Kittrell; and a host of other nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
