Winifred Alexandrina Oudkerk Pickett passed away peacefully in the afternoon of November 19. She was born in Agricola Village, Guyana. In Guyana, she trained in midwifery and she skillfully attended to mothers and children. After moving to Boston in 1984, she continued caring for others through her work at Mattapan Hospital and ending her career at working in central processing at Boston Medical Center.
Winnie was active in her community, always ready with an infectious smile and a cheerful greeting. She served on the Board of Directors of Upham's Corner Health Center, on the Greenhouse Advisory Committee of the Food Project, volunteered with Friends of the Dudley Library, and was active in the Jones Hill Civic Association. She was committed to our civic life, frequently taking advantage of any opportunity to speak with our elected officials and working at the polls on Election Day.
Winnie's faith was the foundation of her life and when asked how she is doing, often responded with, "blessed and highly favored." She was a committed member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Dorchester where she sang in the choir and served in many leadership roles including Senior Warden. In her later years, she also attended the Church of St. Augustine and St. Martin in Roxbury. Winnie encouraged so many in their spiritual journeys, ministering to all who came across her path.
Winnie is survived by two sons, Roderick A. Pickett and wife Oneka (Nicky) and Dwayne A. Oudkerk-Pickett; three grandsons, Tristan A. Pickett and wife Andranette, Ty'Von A. Pickett and wife Tiffany, and Kenneth L. James; and one great granddaughter, Isabella S. Pickett; siblings Rickford, Lynette, Kenrick, and Lennox, as well as many extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents Gerald I. Oudkerk & Clarris C. Price-Oudkerk; beloved son Nigel A.R.J. Pickett; beloved grandson Tevin A. Pickett; and beloved siblings Vilma, Albert, Clement, Irma, and Ewald. She is also survived by a large chosen family gathered together by her love including two sons, Paul Yates and Christopher Whiteman and his husband Jonathan Rotenberg.
Friends and family are invited to gather with us to Celebrate Her Life and Legacy.
