In Loving Memory of Waple Maylene Browne

September 28, 1949 – December 11, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend, Registered Nurse Waple Maylene Browne, who peacefully transitioned to eternal rest at the age of 75 on December 11, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones.

Waple was born on September 28, 1949, in St. Michael, Barbados, to her cherished parents, Amethyst Benskin (AB) and George Hunte (Rickson). As the firstborn for her mother and the middle child for her father, Waple’s nurturing spirit and strong work ethic emerged early. By the tender age of 8, she was already cooking and caring for others, laying the foundation for her lifelong dedication to service and caregiving.

In 1968, at just 19 years old, Waple courageously migrated to Boston, MA, to pursue her nursing career, which began in Barbados. In 1972, she married the love of her life, Winfield Browne, and together they raised four beautiful children: Hanif, Delbert, TeCora, and Katrina. Waple became a proud U.S. citizen in 1977. While attending nursing school, she shared her culture by selling her native dishes, creating a community of love, laughter, and food. She graduated from Bunker Hill Community College with an Associate in Science in 1982 and earned her Licensed Practical Nurse in 1988 from Mass Bay Community College. She immediately, enrolled in an accelerated course & obtained her degree to become a Registered Nurse.

Waple was a true “Jill of all trades”—a devoted wife, mother, nurse, EMT, social worker, and so much more. She took pride in her many accomplishments and fiercely maintained her independence. Throughout her illustrious career, she served as Director of Nursing at several esteemed institutions, including City Hospital (BMC), South Bay Correctional Facility, and numerous nursing homes across Massachusetts.

A vibrant spirit, Waple’s love for music was unparalleled. From soca and calypso to rap, gospel, and R&B, her playlist was a testament to her eclectic taste. She especially adored Tupac Shakur and could recite his lyrics word for word. During Boston Carnival season, Waple was the life of the festivities, joyfully “wuking up” on Blue Hill Avenue and celebrating her Bajan roots with pride.

Deeply rooted in her faith, Waple worshiped at community churches across Boston, often sharing scripture on her voicemail to inspire others. Known for her selflessness, she was always a dependable source of support, offering help without hesitation.

Waple’s incredible life was enriched by her linguistic abilities; she spoke six languages fluently, including Haitian Creole, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, Portuguese, and French. Her caregiving extended far beyond her profession, as she consistently helped complete strangers with compassion and grace.

Waple is now reunited with her beloved firstborn Hanif, her sister Margo, her parents, and a host of cherished loved ones.

She leaves behind her devoted husband, Winfield, her children Delbert, TeCora, and Katrina, and her grandchildren: Aleka, Everlyn, Hanif, Roukie, Nigel, De’Sean, Elijah, Ky’Aurah, D’Mitri, Khyier, Italee, Jahmar, and Kymai. She is also survived by her sister, Pamela of Barbados, and a large circle of relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

 Morton Street’s finest. 740 forever.

50+ years of nursing the community.

Waple’s extraordinary life of service, love, and joy will remain an inspiration to all who knew her.
