Mary Lee Mayo (Carter) was born April 13, 1943, in Coatopa, Alabama to the late Lois and Ethel Gene Carter. She was raised in Sumter County, Alabama and was a member of Pine Top Baptist Church where she received Christ in her life at an early age. Mary moved to Boston at age of 20 where she found employment as a nanny for a young family, she also worked at Hale House for over 30 years and Prudential Center.
Mary got married and had three daughters Shirley, Gloria and Mary Ann Mayo. A wonderful cook, homemaker and extremely hard-working woman. Mary was a shining example of what a virtuous woman should be. She was a great storyteller who loved to have family gatherings, always laughing and smiling. Mary had a beautiful heart and was always giving of herself and time to others, putting herself last and everyone else first.
Mary’s life was filled with compassion and generosity. She left an impeccable mark on all of us. Strong in adversity. Never giving up through all the trials she went through. We thank you Lord for allowing her to be a part of our lives.
Mary’s oldest daughter proceeded her in death, Shirley Mayo. A brother and sister proceeded her in death as well, Geneva Carter and Pratt Lee Carter.
After a long illness, Mary departed this life on Friday, July 12, 2024. She leaves to cherish her memory; two daughters Gloria Mayo and Mary Mayo, both Boston; two sisters, Nellie Woodroffe and (the late Leon) of Boston, MA and Leatha (late Rev.
