John Anderson Small was born on August 15, 1956, in Saint Michael, Barbados, in the West Indies, and passed away on December 19, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. John was the eldest of four sons born to Maureen Small and Stanley Fitzpatrick Bowen. John immigrated to the United States at the age of 15, ultimately settling in Boston, Massachusetts, with his mother and brothers. John attended Combermer Secondary School in Barbados and Hyde Park High School in Boston. He also took courses at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.
Growing up, John loved tinkering with electronics and would often take them apart and put them back together again. He was also a master on the ones and twos, a popular DJ named "Star Child" who could always get the party started. Throughout his life John periodically lived in Minnesota, alongside his brothers Anderson and Tyrone, but always returned home to Dorchester to be closer to his mother. John was very involved in his mother Maureen's care, especially after her dementia diagnosis.
John enjoyed playing bingo, dominoes and other games with his friends and family members. He was fiercely confident and competitive and even loved trash-talk while playing his favorite games.
John is preceded in death by his father, Stanley Fitzpatrick Bowen, grandmother, Germaine Ilene Small, and brother, Tyrone "Malcolm" Small. He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Maureen Adams (Small); sons Derek Cox, Tyrone Young and Druvon Moore; brothers Anderson Small and Derek Small; granddaughter Ayaan Tyece Young-McZeke and grandson Taylin Young; adopted Aunt Luella Norman; longtime confidant Martha Williams; 2 aunts and 2 uncles; 4 nieces and 6 nephews as well as a host of other loved ones and friends.
