Reverend Dr. John Matthew Lopez April 24, 1958 - March 15, 2025 Reverend Dr. John Matthew Lopez, a cherished author, activist, and proud resident of Boston's Roxbury community, departed this world on March 15, 2025. Born on April 24, 1958, to Gilbert and Audrey Lopez, he was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest brother, Michael Lopez. Reverend Lopez leaves behind a loving family: his siblings, Carol Lopez, Margo Lopez, David Lopez, Martin Lopez, and Kenneth Lopez; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended cousins who grew up closely knit, resembling brothers and sisters. His joyful spirit and charismatic presence made him a beloved figure in both his family and community. An avid pool player and known affectionately as quite the ladies' man, Matthew also had a profound spiritual side. He was a devoted practitioner of daily prayer and Bible study, which he often spoke about on his popular podcast. His literary works include several memoirs and insightful explorations into Christian doctrine, notably on the concept of dunamis—the power of God. In his own words, "The word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword." Matthew's spiritual journey was marked by significant milestones. He enrolled in Teen Challenge in 1979 and later graduated from Bethel Bible Institute with high honors. Over the years, he received missionary, evangelist, and pastoral evangelist credentials, culminating in his ordination in 2004. His steadfast dedication to his faith led him to serve in various capacities within the United Holy Church of America, notably as an elder in the New England District. Reverend Lopez's ministry extended beyond the pulpit; he was deeply involved in local churches such as Bethel Pentecostal Church, Holy Temple Church, Calvary Church International, Timothy Baptist Church, and Good Shepherd Church of God in Christ. He was also unafraid to engage with politicians, academic leaders, and community figures, advocating tirelessly for the principles he held dear. Matthew's legacy is not just in his written and spoken words, but in his vibrant spirit, which brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. His teachings and his life remind us that "the power of God available in the name of Jesus is to help us live right first, and then do right in the work of God." He will be missed immensely, but through his extensive body of work and the lives he touched, Reverend Dr. John Matthew Lopez will forever be remembered.
