Domingas “Madiminga” Cabral was born on March 20, 1938, in Mira Mira, Cabo Verde, to Martina and Mano. She was the sister to the late Benjamin "Djami" Cabral. Domingas was a woman of love, joy, and resilience. Her resilience got her through any obstacles she faced and is the foundation of the legacy she instilled.
Madiminga's journey to the United States in 1979 was a testament to her resilience. Despite the lack of a formal education, she was unwavering in her determination to learn. With the support of her children and grandchildren, she embarked on a journey of self-education, learning the basics of reading and writing. Her career as a housekeeper at the Sheraton Hotel and John Hancock was a testament to her hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Her commitment to giving back was evident in her over 25 years of volunteering for the city of Boston. Her efforts were recognized when she was awarded Senior Companion of the Year by Bill Clinton and highly regarded by Mayor Thomas Menino.
Madiminga was a woman of humility. All her life, she gave to others and provided shelter and love. She was always known for her sense of humor and how she would "conta parti." Madiminga was a vibrant and bold woman. She encouraged women to stand in their power and love themselves. She loved to sing and dance, but most importantly, she loved her family. Family is what completes her, and she was always the center of her world.
A mother loves unconditionally, she protects, she inspires, and is self-less. Madminiga embodied all these things not only for her children, but for those around her. She gave to others, never expecting anything but through giving, she received more than she already has. With her strength, resilience, love, and joy, she has created a legacy and impact this world will never forget. What a beautiful exchange.
She is preceded in death by her brother Benjamin "Djami" Cabral, nephew Antonio Cabral, grandson Johnny Cabral, and granddaughter Elianny Cabral. Her six children survive Madiminga: Eunice "Nircey," Jose, Joaquim, Joao Domingo, Ines, and Estelita; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members.
