Daughter of Charles Tucker from Cleveland,Ohio and Josephine Ionnone from Sicily, Italy. Born on November 16,1937 in Neptune,NJ. After the early demise of her birth parents, Louise was raised by Pauline Stephens from Neptune, New Jersey, her adopted mother.
In the late 1950’s, she married her first husband, Robert E. Joyner of Virgina. From that union, she had three children - Robin, Robert and Derrick.
Louise later married Robert (Bob) L.Singleton in 1972.
In the mid 1960’s, Louise obtained her barbering license in Boston,MA. In 1970, Louise and Bob opened up their first husband and wife barbershop “Talk Of The Town” at 74 Warren Street, Roxbury,MA. Due to overwhelming success of the shop, they decided to expand by purchasing a larger building at 122 Seaver Street, Dorchester,MA. In conjunction with her barbering career at “Talk Of The Town” she opened a florist shop adjacent to the new Talk Of The Town, named Louise’s Florist. After running the florist for several years, she decided to go back to her true passion of barbering and hair styling.
Anyone who knew Louise knew she had a quick tongue and a bag of jokes, and an infectious laugh. Known to many as Weezy or Lou but affectionately known as Mimi by her grandchildren and close loved ones. In her early years, as the only female barber, Louise learned quickly that she had to observe all activities in the shop and developed eyes of a hawk. Subsequently earning the title of “The Scope” (meaning nothing got by her). She enjoyed writing poetry in her spare time, loved music and was always the first one on the dance floor and would encourage others to join her. Louise was very thoughtful and extremely generous, and always knew when someone needed a kind word or a telephone call.
In 1984, Louise decided to go back to her home state of New Jersey, where she owned and operated her second barbershop, “Cutters Corner” in Long Branch, New Jersey. Louise became the first female black owner in the Township of Long Branch. She was very active in the local communities, with her own community “Care Fund” and a member of The Urban League, N.A.A.C.P. and she received numerous awards over the years, for her service.
With the love of barbering and dedication to her neighbors, she participated in grooming services and products at the Ocean County Correctional Facility, assisting the youth. Louise was honored with a certificate of special congressional recognition from the New Jersey State Senate and General Assembly, for all of her good deeds.
In the early 2000’s, Louise came back to Boston and continued to do hair at Nice Touch in Randolph,MA. She continued to serve the community, still receiving many awards. Eight years ago, Louise decided to hang up her clippers and retire.
Louise was loved and cherished by many family and friends, to include her siblings: Sarah Tucker, Joyce Williams, Charles Tucker, Ernest Tucker and Jerome Williams; Her children: daughter, Robin Lawrence & two sons, Robert Joyner and his wife Torria, Derrick Joyner and his wife Teresa. She also leaves eight grandchildren: Chanda, Robert Jerrell, Candice, Christopher, Ian, DJ, Brandi, Lyric and her six loving great grandchildren. Louise reunites with those that preceded her in death including her first grandson, Robert Jerrell Joyner.
The family deeply appreciates all those who loved Louise, and patronized her businesses for almost 40 years. Louise will be dearly missed and we will continue to honor her legacy.
